Fire retardancy in industrial textiles: inherent vs treated

Fire retardancy is one of those specs that gets asked for as a yes/no, when the real question is which kind. A fabric can resist fire because of what the fibre is, or because of something applied to it — and those two behave very differently over a product's life.

What fire retardant actually means

Fire retardant does not mean fireproof. It means the material resists ignition, slows flame spread, and self-extinguishes once the ignition source is removed.

That last part is the one that matters in practice. The point of a fire-retardant textile is rarely that it survives — it's that it doesn't accelerate a fire and doesn't keep burning on its own, which is what buys people time to get out.

Where it's required

  • Public and commercial furnishings — curtains, blinds and drapes in venues, schools and hospitality
  • Marquees, event structures and temporary public spaces
  • Protective workwear and industrial environments
  • Camping and accommodation textiles
  • Transport interiors

In most of these cases it's a compliance requirement with a standard attached, not a nice-to-have. If a spec sheet or a fire report is going to be asked for, say so at quoting — it changes the fabric selection, not just the paperwork.

Inherently fire-resistant fibres

Some fibres resist fire because of their chemistry. The property is part of the fibre and cannot wash out, wear off or degrade with cleaning.

  • Wool — naturally flame-resistant, self-extinguishing, and high ignition temperature
  • Aramids (Kevlar, Nomex) — the basis of firefighting and industrial protective clothing
  • Modacrylic — an inherently flame-resistant synthetic, common in protective and furnishing textiles
  • Melamine fibres — hold structural stability at high temperatures

These cost more up front, and for a permanent installation that gets cleaned repeatedly, they're usually the cheaper answer over the life of the product.

Chemically treated fabrics

Conventional fabrics — cotton, polyester, blends — can be given fire-retardant properties with a chemical treatment. This is far cheaper and lets you use a fabric you'd otherwise want for its look, weight or cost.

The catch is durability of the treatment. Depending on the chemistry, treatments can diminish with washing, weathering and UV exposure. Some are rated for a defined number of wash cycles; some are not intended to be washed at all.

This is the single most common misunderstanding we see: a treated fabric that met the standard when it was installed may not still meet it after a few years of cleaning. If a certificate has to stay valid, that needs to be part of the specification from the start.

Choosing between them

Treated fabric makes sense for shorter-life or lightly-serviced applications where cost matters and the fabric choice is driven by appearance.

Inherent fire resistance makes sense for long-life installations, anything washed regularly, and anything where a compliance certificate has to hold up years after handover.
